    The Gil Cartoon Book
    -- First Edition

This publication is more than a book of illustrations. It is a tribute to a legend, a man who created more than 1500 pieces of art for QST. The work of Philip "Gil" Gildersleeve, W1CJD, became a tradition. In tribute to this talented, creative and devoted artist and ham, the ARRL presents in this book a reprint of a portion of the best of his work.

    About the Artist:
Philip "Gil" Gildersleeve, W1CJD, contributed over 1500 cartoons and drawings to QST and the ARRL for almost 40 years. Gil was an avid radio amateur, devoted family man and exceptionally active in the community. For several years he worked as a radio operator aboard merchant ships and later on was News Editor of the Middletown (CT) Press. Although Gil became a silent key in 1966 his characters live on. Still today, his conceptions remain alive in the minds of both old-timers and newcomers to Amateur Radio.

"This first edition collection of Gil's cartoons was introduced in 1986."

    Instruments of Amplification
-- Fun With Homemade Tubes, Transistors, and More

written and illustrated by H. P. Friedrichs

Are you interested in building sensitive audio amplifiers from magnets, a shoe-polish tin and a couple of carbon rods? How about a working triode vacuum tube built from candle holders and old glass ashtrays? Perhaps you’d like to construct your own transistor from plumber’s fittings, glass beads, and a tiny crystal. If so, you’ve come to the right place.

Instruments of Amplification is jam-packed with history, science background, basic theory, and hard-to-find hands-on details pertaining to the construction of an amazing array of homebrew amplifying devices. Rooted in the same ‘build-it-from-scratch’ philosophy that made his first book, The Voice of the Crystal, a success, Instruments of Amplification reduces complex devices to their essential elements and then shows how they can be constructed from commonly available materials.

In the process of building, you’ll also learn secrets that will find application to the other projects. Learn to drill a hole in a glass, generate high voltages, or create and measure a high vacuum. Learn how to dismantle a light bulb, harvest carbon from old batteries, or deposit a layer of metal onto a glass so thin that it is transparent! How about creating your own primitive semiconductor materials from garden-shed chemicals? The list goes on and on!

The wealth of information contained in this book is augmented by 150 photos, illustrations, and engravings, in addition to numerous charts, tables, and formulas. Readers interested in further exploration will appreciate the 120+ references to period books, magazines, CD-ROMs and Web sites.

    Don C. Wallace: W6AM, Amateur Radio's Pioneer
-- by Jan David Perkins, N6AW

This book traces the life of Don Wallace, W6AM, and the early history of Amateur Radio. Don's experience with wireless in 1909 preceded government regulations or any form of licensing. Naval stations, commercial stations, ships at sea, and the first wireless experimenters all shared the same wavelengths.

Born in 1898, Don took an interest in wireless at the age of ten when the industry was just in its infancy. The timing was right for a bright and dedicated man to come along and make a lasting imprint on the wireless community. Over the years, he would be the radio operator for a President, build the best Amateur Radio station in the country, write a shortwave book, set the standards of operating achievement for many amateurs, share the podium with the most prominent amateurs of the era, build the largest and most powerful Amateur Radio station in the world, and be the role model for many of the young men entering the hobby. It was the latter that he enjoyed the most. Don held an annual open house and would go to great lengths to encourage newcomers to the hobby.

Although always a hobby to Don, many of the leaders of the radio industry came to know and respect him. The word always used to describe Don and his attitude toward the wireless hobby was "enthusiasm."

    Practical Wire Antennas 2
-- Edited by Ian Poole, G3YWX

Based on the hugely popular Practical Wire Antennas by John Heys, G3BDQ this book is significantly expanded and fully revised for the 21st Century. Nearly doubling in size with even more practical, complete and easy to understand designs for a wide range of wire antennas.

Practical Wire Antennas 2 contains just about every type of wire antenna imaginable including plenty of original designs that you simply won't find in other publications. You're sure to find one that is ideal for your own particular set of circumstances. Some will fit small urban gardens and others are best deployed by those lucky enough to have plenty of available space.

Theory is kept to a minimum throughout the book, and only a few formulas are given where they are necessary to allow the reader to calculate the lengths of various antennas. Practical Wire Antennas 2 has chapters covering feed lines, dipoles, antennas with tuned feeders, loop antennas, end-fed wires and verticals. The book also provides a wealth of information and 'know how' on the mechanics of antenna building and includes designs for ATUs for almost every type of antenna.

Theory and Practice of Transmission Line Transformers CD-ROM
    -- by Jerry Sevick, W2FMI

This tutorial introduces the theory and practice of transmission line transformers (TLT). The TLT, which was first introduced by Guanella in 1944, was meant to match the high impedance of a 960-ohm push-pull vacuum tube amplifier to the low impedance of a 60-ohm coaxial cable in the high-frequencyband. Although Guanella's objective could never be realized, his goal remains useful today. With the advent of the transistor, the TLT can be applied to matching low impedances to coaxial cable of up to 50 ohms. Understanding transmission line theory is a prerequisite to understanding TLTs because they transmit energy from input to output by a transmission mode. In an innovative approach to the subject, Sevick divides TLTs into four classes: TLTs with ratios of 1:1, 1:4, less than 1:4 and greater than 1:4. The first two sections in this course cover 1:1 baluns and 1:4 baluns and ununs, as discussed by Guanella and Ruthroff. Additional sections review TLTs with ratios less than 1:4 and greater than 1:4, such as 1:6, 1:9, 1:12. The course concludes with a discussion of information on diode mixers and power combiners\splitters.

The material covered in this course provides incentive to investigate:

  • The application of the latest TLT designs in broadband amplifiers and logic circuits
  • The advancement of the theory and broadband response of the TLT
  • The research in ferrite materials for high permeabilities with high bulk restivity

This course allows you to move through each session at your own speed and requires no extra work books.

    Transmission Line Transformers
    -- by Jerry Sevick, W2FMI

This fourth edition contains all the valuable information from earlier editions: the classic techniques of Guanella and Ruthroff as well as hundreds of real transformers constructed and measured to establish the practical levels of bandwidth and loss performance that can be obtained with transmission transformer techniques. This new edition expands the coverage of what is already the most comprehensive book on this subject.

    Three new chapters cover:

  • Transmission Line Transformer Efficiency
  • Notes on Power Combiners and Mixer Transformers
  • Equal-Delay Transformers

The new information includes observations and analyses by Jerry Sevick intended to clarify the principles behind the operation of these transformers. An entirely new chapter presents the family of equal-delay transformers that enable designers to obtain the benefits of transmission line transformer performance with a wider range of transformation ratios. Written by Gary Breed, K9AY, this chapter maintains Sevick’s practical tone with construction details and performance evaluation of a 50–to–75-ohm equal-delay transformer.

    RF Components and Circuits
    -- by Joe Carr

A comprehensive introduction to designing and understanding RF circuits.

RF Components and Circuits covers the practicalities of designing and building circuits, including fault-finding and use of test equipment.

The RF circuits covered in this book are the heart of the electronic design of TV sets, personal mobile radios, remote control systems, mobile phones, and digital TV and radio, making it essential reading for radio and electronics engineers, students and advanced electronics hobbyists.

Joe Carr demystifies the RF design process, presenting real-world design principles, tips and rules-of-thumb with a minimum of mathematics. By explaining how different circuit types work, and how they can be modified, Joe provides a masterclass for electronics experts and newcomers to RF design alike.

Some basic knowledge of electronics is assumed, but the essential features of RF are fully described, including the important topic of receiver dynamics which is often overlooked in basic textbooks. The theory and circuit descriptions are geared toward genuine design applications rather than the oversimplifications and skeleton circuits of many college texts.

During his career, the late Joe Carr was one of the world’s leading writers on electronics and radio, and an authority on the design and use of RF systems. Whether you are looking for a complete self-study course in RF Technology, or a concise reference to dip into, this book has the solution.

    Edgar Harrison (Details)
-- Soldier-Patriot and Ultra Wireless Operator to Winston Churchill

Edgar Harrison was born in South Wales on St David's Day in 1915. He was a senior colleague of Geoffrey Pidgeon in MI6 (Section VIII) and he had the most extraordinary adventures in World War II. He was in Norway at the time the Germans invaded from where he had to beat a hasty retreat, and was in Brussels during the Blitzkrieg before escaping back to England via Dunkirk. While stationed in Greece the Nazis launched an overwhelming attack. He made his escape via Kalamata in a rowing boat before being rescued by a British destroyer, MS Kandahar. He was landed in Crete where he handled the Ultra traffic during the invasion by the Germans, and later evacuated to Cairo where he spent time recuperating from the wounds sustained in Greece during the retreat to Kalamata.

During all this and more he was, on five occasions, the MI6 wireless operator assigned to Winston Churchill at meetings with Allied leaders. After the war Edgar became the Principal Signals Officer of the Foreign Office - not bad for a boy who joined the Royal Corps of Signals as a boy apprentice in 1929 – at the age of just 14.

    Antenna Compendium Volume 4
-- More antennas--ideas and practical projects!

Hams just love antennas. They love to read and write about them! This is the fourth in the popular ARRL Antenna Compendium series. You'll find 38 articles inside, covering a wide range of topics. There are simple, practical antenna projects, and there are heavy-duty, theoretical treatments of complex arrays.

When the sunspots are low, head for the low-bands--seven articles are devoted to 80 and 160 meters, including some truly gargantuan arrays. Don't we hams love to dream about what rock-crushing low-band signals we'd have, if only we could get that new 200-foot tower? But what happens if we only have a 50-foot tower?

There are articles for mobile work, too. There is also a section on portable or temporary antennas that will get you thinking about Field Day in June, regardless of what time of year you read it.

The original edition of The ARRL Antenna Compendium Volume 4 included a 3.5-inch diskette with data files and software applications. Many of the articles contained within this book make reference to these files and programs. The software diskette is not included in this printing, because most of the programs will now longer function on modern computers. However, the original software is still available, free of charge, for downloading from the ARRL Web site here.

    The Secret Wireless War (Details)
    -- The Story of MI6 Communications--1939-1945
    Softcover Edition

"There never was, in the whole history of wireless, a bigger role for the amateur wireless enthusiast."--author Geoffrey Pidgeon

    Read a review

Possibly the most important UK wireless traffic in World War II was handled by a unit formed in 1938 as part of the communications division of Britain's Secret Intelligence Services (SIS). The Secret Wireless War offers a history of the SIS, its growing use of wireless in the 1930's, its involvement in the dissemination by wireless of Enigma (Ultra) intelligence, and a whole range of secret uses of wireless as part of the successful prosecution of the war.

The Secret Wireless War documents the personal tales of those who were part of this most secret of units, and events that helped to win the war: secret agents abroad, wireless operators handling "Ultra" and agent's traffic, wireless engineers, interceptors, and administrators; the story of Churchill's personal wireless operator; a fleet of 70+ Packard motor cars and converted Dodge ambulances used as mobile wireless stations; and hams listening to the Abwehr (German secret service) and the Gestapo.

This is an extraordinary story that includes hams among those patriots that undoubtedly helped the allied war effort.

As seen on KDKA and heard on The American Entrepreneur Radio Show...WWII Radio Heroes: Letters of Compassion is a story about ham radio operators and others alerting families of POWs during a time of war. The book features more than 30 letters and postcards sent to the author’s family in 1943, notifying them of her grandfather’s capture and status as a prisoner of war. Upon discovering these letters, Ms. Spahr, began researching the people who did this, and why, and reached out to find them or their next of kin, more than 60 years after the fact. Her journey is detailed in WWII Radio Heroes.

    The ARRL DXCC Handbook
    -- --by Jim Kearman, KR1S

    The Thrill of Working DX!

DX in ham radio shorthand means distance, literally talking to people in distant lands. Many radio amateurs enjoy the lure of DXing--seeing how far away we can communicate with other Amateur Radio operators. It’s a way of determining how well our stations -- and we, the operators -- perform. DXing is a full-time goal for some hams and a just-for-fun challenge for others. The pinnacle of DXing success is the ARRL DX Century Club, or DXCC award.

Author Jim Kearman, KR1S, discovered the thrill of DXing shortly after receiving his General Class ham radio license in 1963. After more than 40 years, the fluttery sounds of radio signals from faraway places still thrill him. In short, he still chases DX because it’s great fun!

We hope this book will inspire you to try DXing, and that you’ll use it as a guide to beginning your own DX journey.

    Backyard Antennas
    -- By Peter Dodd, G3LDO

Radio amateurs and short-wave listeners all want to achieve the very best from their HF and VHF equipment. Receivers and transmitters are available to professional standards, but very few people have the real estate to erect the sort of antenna used by a commercial radio station.

Antenna guru Peter Dodd, G3LDO explains how, by using a variety of simple techniques, it is possible to achieve very high performance from a compact antenna. Also detailed is how to make an antenna efficient on several bands at once.

The book covers end-fed and center-fed antennas, rotary beams, loops, tuning units, VHF/UHF antennas, antenna and mast construction, transmission lines, and how to estimate and measure the performance of your antenna.

Whether you have a house, bungalow or apartment, Backyard Antennas will help you find the solution to radiating a good signal on your favorite band.

    More QRP Power
-- More equipment, accessories and antennas for low power radio operating!

In the spirit of the popular QRP Classics and QRP Power published in the 1990s, More QRP Power is an anthology of articles from recent issues of QST and QEX magazines covering construction practices, transceivers, transmitters, receivers, accessories, and antennas. Here are dozens of projects and articles to help you assemble or improve a QRP station for home or travel.

QRP means radio operating with low power—5 watts or less. If you are used to operating with a 100 watt transceiver, you may wonder why anyone would do this.

Radio amateurs (hams) enjoy the magic of communicating over the air with their own equipment, without the benefit of the billions of dollars worth of infrastructure working behind the scenes to power the telephone and Internet.

QRP operators take that one step further, communicating over the air with simple equipment and antennas and only a few watts of power. They savor the satisfaction that comes with finishing a challenging radio contact. They enjoy assembling a tiny station that they can take anywhere, getting on the air with a radio the size of a paperback book and an antenna that folds up into a briefcase or knapsack.

Why not give QRP a try? And if you are already addicted, why not try a new antenna or accessory? Whether you want to build a complete station from scratch or just an item or two to use with your kit or commercial QRP transceiver, you'll find it here.

    GPS and Amateur Radio
    -- --By Walter Fields, W4WCF

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based, radio navigation system. GPS devices have become commonplace in consumer electronics. GPS units and GPS technology is used in our cars, on our boats, in cell phones, in our personal computers and PDAs. GPS has improved the way we navigate, communicate, and move about the planet.

With this book, you’ll explore GPS: its history, how it works, and navigating with a GPS receiver. We’ll also examine how Amateur Radio operators (or “hams”) have made use of GPS technology. A popular ham radio application is in the Automatic Position Reporting System, or APRS*. By connecting inexpensive GPS receivers to their radio gear, hams transmit their positions and other information, which is then displayed on maps at the receiving stations. The result is an effective method of direction finding for public service activities such as search-and-rescue—and for fun!
