ARRL Continuing Education Program

Emergency Communications Field Instructor Resources

Prepared by AG4HC

Hugh Connolly, AG4HC and the South Florida Section have developed PowerPoint instructional aids for the Emergency Communications Level 1 course.  They are sharing these materials for others to use as a foundation for instruction.

You may download them and adapt them to your use. Please remember to include the ARRL registered trademark statements in the introduction.

Hugh provides this background information to describe how the South Florida section conducts their training.

“I constructed the presentation to allow for a two session training program, i.e. two Saturdays.  The first session, Part 1, prepared the students for a training exercise the following week on their local ARES/RACES Net.  This training involved a check in to the net along with some other training feature such as a QSY to the net's standby repeater, etc. The second part gets into the details associated with contacting and reporting procedures.  The second session usually finished up at noon.

After lunch I suggested that each instructor review each of the learning unit questions.  This takes about an hour.  The test session followed and most students were finished and out by 1500.  This format has been very successful here in South Florida and we have many Hams that have received their ARECC Level I credential.

I included show-and-tell displays of Go Kits, MRE's, battery charging and storage, safety, etc, for the students to see during lunch and course breaks.  This is very effective in keeping your students interested in their preparations for their ARES/RACES assignments.

Several instructors have used the presentation to just review the test questions before an exam session.  This has proven to be very effective also as it gives those students who have been studying the book without the benefit of the class a chance to ask questions regards the answer selections.”
