    Trojan ARC . . . . 2A KS (northwest) . . . . GOTA NSØO

This was a ‘retro’ year for the Trojans; 3 years ago we gave up a nice park at the edge of Colby for the airport, with a clearer and cleaner RF environment. But we’ve missed the cozy environs and playground equipment so we returned to Phillips Park.

It worked as intended because the kids had a great time and off-duty operator kibbitzing was, if possible, better than ever. We did take a hit with line noise and apologize to the many stations who surely attempted fruitlessly to answer our CQs. That, along with an unusual 5 hour downpour from 11 PM – 4 AM and declining solar condx gave us a major drop in scoring, but the enjoyment went unscathed.

Fun highlights: delightful cool wx (even the rain was beneficial for farmers), NS0O’s left-handed keying and wisecracks, finishing all setup 75 minutes prior to the start (unheard of!), working the new F class stations, nice rig complement of FT-840, FT-757, IC-706, 2 FT-847s and bandpass filters. Bummers: no 6M Es openings, declining sunsopts, missed the fun graveyard shift due to rain.

    Crew complement:

    NØXNO Tom setup

    NØXNJ Kathy cooking

    NØXJ Gregg repairs, logistics

    WBØUSQ Gerald moral support

    KØQP Jim ssb S&P, setup

    NSØO Chet cw, GOTA

    KBØLGX Gerry ssb run, cooking

    ACØJ Jeff logistics, ssb S&P

    KCØIWH Mike cw, ssb

    KCØHBR Jim ssb S&P, teardown

    KCØGLA Nathan satellite, VHF

    KØFJ Mike networking, ssb run

    WAØCAL John food, moral support

    KØBJ Bruce cw

    RESULTS:

    CW 273 + 92 GOTA = 365

    SSB 260 + 12 GOTA = 272

    Power mult X2 = 2004 QSO points

1100 bonus points CLAIMED SCORE 3104

CU next year for more fun. More photos at http://www.carrollsweb.com/bfrahm/FD2003.htm -- K0BJ

Although noisy and obstructed from an RF point of view, Phillips Park is a delightful family venue for FD.

Park picnic tables provide convenient and passably comfortable operating space. KCØIWH KCØGLA and KØFJ operate while KBØLGX relaxes.

Sacrilege? With no internal keyer, the FT-840 called for a Whiterook all-in-1 keyer, which happened to get weighted with a nearby Bencher paddle…..

NØXJ stands ready to defeat any Murphy visits. KØQP on 15 cw, KCØGLA on sat, NSØO 40M GOTA, KBØLGX 20 ssb.

Field Day always comes at wheat harvest, but we’ll be ready to work you next year. 73
