This feature is a periodic update of what the ARRL is doing on behalf of its members. This installment covers the month of June.
The ARRL Board of Directors has authorized the ARRL National Convention to be held June 20-22, 2003 in Arlington, Texas. "I'm extremely pleased that the 2003 National Convention will be held in the Dallas-Fort Worth area," said ARRL President Jim Haynie, W5JBP.
Vice President Joel Harrison, W5ZN, Vice President for International Affairs Rod Stafford, W6ROD and Technical Relations Manager Paul Rinaldo, W4RI, attended the biggest Hamfest in Europe--Friedrichshafen, Germany, June 28, 29, and 30. Special Assistant to the Executive Vice President David Patton, NT1N and Membership Services Department Manager Wayne Mills, N7NG manned the ARRL DXCC booth.
ARRL has challenged the FCC's authority to permit Part 15 unlicensed operation of radio devices that may interfere with licensed services. Microsoft, Apple Computer and several unlicensed device makers filed opposition comments.
ARRL has integrated Product Fulfillment, Membership Recruitment, Advertising and Circulation (of QST and other ARRL periodicals) into a New ARRL Sales and Marketing Department.
For the first time in its 69-year history, Field Day 2002, included participation by amateurs in all of North and South America--including the Caribbean. Clubs, groups and individuals taking part can upload photos and comments to the ARRL Contest Soapbox on ARRLWeb.
W1AW has discontinued its 3990 kHz phone bulletin, transmitted daily at 0145 UTC until the FCC General Communications Emergency declaration is rescinded.
HQ staff, operating W1AW for Field Day 2002 made 526 CW, 623 SSB and 5 RTTY QSOs. The station was active on all bands from 2 through 80 meters.
Kenwood USA has donated ARCP-2000 control software to complement the TS-2000X transceiver recently provided to W1AW. The software has been installed in the satellite tracking PC.
A $33,000 grant from United Technologies Corporation will provide ARRL Emergency Communications Course Level I training for 250 Connecticut amateurs. Connecticut will serve as a model for similar training opportunities in other states.
The ARRL DXCC Desk has announced the approval of several DX operations for DXCC credit. These include Western Sahara: S07U and S07X; Mauritania: 5T5RUZ, 5T5CQT, 5T5GCW, 5T5PBV, 5T5UPA and 5T5U; Vietnam: 3W2DC; Democratic Republic of the Congo: 9Q0AR, 9Q1A and 9Q1YL; Lord Howe Island: VK9LY; North Cook Island: ZK1NCP; Myanmar: XZ1DB and XZ5DB; Pratas Island: BQ9P.
The Question Pool Committee of the National Committee of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (NCVEC) has released the final Technician (Element 2) syllabus. The syllabus will be used to develop the new question pool for Technician examinations that becomes effective July 1, 2003. ARRL is a member of the committee.
The Logs Received Page for ARRL contests is now automated. All electronic logs processed by the robot now appear within a few hours of receipt.
The ARRL Contest Rate Sheet, a newsletter for those with an interest in contests and contesting, is available for e-mail delivery--free of charge to ARRL members.
ARRL Life Member Matt Kastigar, W0XEU, author of the article "The St Louis Switcher," was the winner of the QST Cover Plaque Award for May. Cast a ballot for your favorite article in the July 2002 issue of QST. Voting ends July 31.
The ARRL Certification and Continuing Education Program has announced its newest on-line course--Satellite Communications (EC-007). Registration opened June 24.
ARRL helped move a favorable 7-MHz proposal through FCC Informal Working Group 6 (IWG-6), the FCC World Radiocommunication Conference 2003 Advisory Committee (WAC) and out for comment via FCC public notice. Technical Relations Specialist Walter Ireland, WB7CSL, played the key role.
In IWG-5, ARRL objected to an International Telecommunication Union World Radio Conference (WRC) proposal for a new mobile allocation for radio Local Area Networks in the 5.65-5.725 GHz band because of its impact on the existing amateur and amateur-satellite allocations. Our concerns were noted in the same FCC public notice, which also expressed the FCC's own concerns. ARRL Executive Vice President David Sumner, K1ZZ and Technical Relations Manager Paul Rinaldo, W4RI, handled the objection.
ARRL Lab Supervisor Ed Hare, W1RFI, made his "How to Build a Yagi Using a Propane Torch--While Dressed in a Business Suit" presentation at the ARRL Atlantic Division Convention and Hamfest, Rochester, New York. Hare also led a forum on antenna modeling by computer.
Field and Educational Support Team Supervisor Mary Lau, N1VH, was the Saturday night guest banquet speaker at the San Francisco Section Convention, Ferndale, California June 29, and Senior Lab Engineer Zack Lau, W1VT, took part in a forum June 30.
Membership Services Department Manager Wayne Mills, N7NG, represented ARRL HQ at the West Gulf Division Convention in Arlington, Texas.
Certification and Continuing Education Program Coordinator Dan Miller, K3UFG, and DXCC Assistant Judy Miller checked cards for DXCC credit at the Eastern Pennsylvania Section Convention in Bloomsburg.
