This feature--including convenient Web links to useful information--is a quick monthly update of some of the things ARRL is doing on behalf of its members. This installment covers the month of August.
ARRL West Central Florida Section Manager Dave Armbrust, AE4MR, and Ron Wetjen, WD4AHZ, coordinated ARES volunteers from within and outside Florida in the wake of the Hurricane Charley disaster. Cell phones were out for several days, making the contribution of Amateur Radio volunteers particularly helpful.
The ARRL sought members' comments on a planned petition to the FCC seeking to regulate amateur subbands by bandwidth rather than by mode.
The ARRL asked the FCC to immediately shut down a broadband over power line (BPL) field trial in the Cottonwood, Arizona, area because it's causing "severe interference" to Amateur Radio communication.
W1AW Station Manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q, quickly ordered new hardware after a lightning strike knocked out the telephone version of ARRL Audio News; as a result, the weekly newscast was reinstated promptly.
Senior News Editor Rick Lindquist, N1RL, wrote and distributed four editions of The ARRL Letter. Distribution is up by 2.5% over last year.
ARRL members in Minnesota elected Richard H. "Skip" Jackson, KS0J, of Inver Grove Heights, as their new Section Manager.
Registration opened for the ARRL RFI, Antenna Design and Construction, HF Digital Communication, Amateur Radio Emergency Communications (Levels I, II and III), Antenna Modeling, and Technician Licensing on-line courses.
At the ARRL Southwestern Division Convention near Phoenix, SW Division Director Art Goddard, W6XD; Vice Director Tuck Miller, NZ6T; International Affairs Vice President Rod Stafford, W6ROD, CEO David Sumner, K1ZZ, Chief Development Officer Mary Hobart, K1MMH, and Sales & Marketing Manager Dennis Motschenbacher, K7BV, took part in the ARRL Forum and various other events. In addition, Dan Miller, K3UFG, offered a free Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Course seminar.
Dan also attended the APCO International Conference in Montreal and the New England Division Convention in Boxboro, Massachusetts. Senior News Editor Rick Lindquist, N1RL, also attended the New England Division Convention.
Contest Branch Manager Dan Henderson, N1ND, attended the Alabama State Convention in Huntsville, while DXCC Manager Bill Moore, NC1L, traveled to Tokyo to check DXCC cards at Ham Fair 2004. Dennis Motschenbacher also attended the New Mexico State Convention in Albuquerque and the Eastern Washington Section Convention in Spokane. Mark Spencer, WA8SME, attended the West Virginia State Convention in Weston.
Amateur Radio Emergency Service units in the ARRL Sacramento Valley Section in Northern California were on high alert as firefighters fought to contain and control the French Fire.
ARES and RACES volunteers in Maryland helped bridge a communication gap after Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly--the county's largest--experienced a near-total telephone outage.
The DXCC Branch announced it will accept QSLs for operations taking place in Somalia (6O/T5). The DXCC Branch announced that beginning in September, there will be no deadline for the DXCC Annual List.
Lab Engineer Michael Tracy, KC1SX, tested transmitting equipment at W1AW in preparation for the upcoming Frequency Measuring Test.
Nine educators from across the US attended the first ARRL Education and Technology Program (ETP) Teachers Institute.
The Contest Branch completed data entry for 2004 Field Day submissions, and the complete list of logs received was posted.
Field and Regulatory Correspondent Chuck Skolaut, K0BOG, represented the ARRL HQ staff at the Kansas State (Salina) and Missouri State (Columbia) Conventions on successive weekends.
Club/Mentor Program Coordinator Norm Fusaro, N3IZ, provided a group of HQ visitors with the information on forming a class for their Girl Scout Troop.
CEO David Sumner, K1ZZ, did a BPL-related interview with Investors Business Daily.
Media Relations Manager Jennifer Hagy, N1TDY, posted the July issue of Contact!
Editorial and Production staff wrapped up work on the greatly revised 2005 ARRL Handbook, the October issue of QST, and the September/October issues of NCJ and QEX.
Regulatory Information Specialist John Hennessee, N1KB, assisted several amateurs with local government zoning restrictions and problems with covenants.
Public Service Specialist Steve Ewald, WV1X, attended the
2004 National Citizen Corps Conference in Denver.
