This feature--including convenient Web links to useful information--is a quick monthly update of some of the things ARRL is doing on behalf of its members. This installment covers the month of February.
Chief Operating Officer Harold Kramer, WJ1B, of Cheshire, Connecticut, has joined the ARRL Headquarters staff.
Senior Assistant Technical Editor Dean Straw, N6BV, testified at a California Public Utilities Commission public hearing on broadband deployment, including BPL.
ARES/RACES of Calhoun County, Alabama, took part in a successful communication drill involving a simulated release of nerve gas. Alabama SEC Jay Isbell, KA4KUN, headed the group of volunteers at Fort McClellan, while EC Randall Landers, KG4EUD, headed the operation at the Emergency Operations Center.
At the urging of the ARRL, Rep Michael Bilirakis (R-FL) introduced the Amateur Radio Spectrum Protection Act of 2005, HR 691, into to the US House of Representatives.
The ARRL Foundation Board of Directors selected Paul Danzer, N1II, as the 2004 recipient of the Bill Orr, W6SAI, Technical Writing Award.
Three new Section Managers--Tom Blackwell, N5GAR, from North Texas; Tom Fagan, WB7NXH, from Arizona, and David Norris, K5UZ, from Arkansas, will take office April 1. Ballot counting was held at ARRL HQ.
The April issue of QST and the March/April issues of QEX and NCJ have been released to the printer.
Several enhancements have been made to this year's Field Day Rules.
Chuck Skolaut, K0BOG, forwarded several reports of intruding and interfering signals to the FCC. Two hams with direction-finding equipment uncovered the source of the "Yosemite Sam" interfering signal on 3700 kHz that had been a cause of complaints by Albuquerque-area hams.
A new on-line Certification and Continuing Education course, Analog Electronics, started February 25. Announcements provided by Jean Wolfgang, WB3IOS, helped fill the class--all 30 slots were filled soon after registration opened.
Registration opened for the ARRL Emergency Communications (Levels I, II and III), Technician Licensing, Radio Frequency Propagation, Antenna Modeling, HF Digital Communication, Antenna Design and Construction, and VHF/UHF--Beyond the Repeater on-line courses. Bill Barrett, W1WJB, coordinator of the Community Education Project, held the second CEP field site meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. A total of 42 Citizen Corps Council members attended. District EC Walt Schuknecht, N7IZM, and four area ARES members assisted Bill.
John Hennessee, N1KB, added a new FAQ and other material to the Regulatory Information Web page. He reports receiving a large number of questions concerning the FCC's pending License Restructuring proposal. John also assisted several ARRL members with local government zoning problems and covenant problems.
The ARRL-sponsored International DX Contest (CW) was held.
ARRL President Jim Haynie, W5JBP, sent congratulations to ARRL Member Emma Berg, W0JUV/AAR7AX, of Lawrence, Kansas, on the occasion of her 100th birthday.
ARRL Chief Executive Officer David Sumner, K1ZZ, visited the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, in January to establish a working relationship with key staff in the Library's Congressional Research Service.
Several ARRL officials and members of the HQ staff made presentations at the Miami Tropical Hamboree (Southern Florida Section Convention), including International Affairs Vice President Rod Stafford, W6ROD; IARU President Larry Price, W4RA; Southeastern Division Director Frank Butler, W4RH; Vice Director Sandy Donahue, W4RU; Southern Florida SM Sherri Brower, W4STB, as well as Lab Manager Ed Hare, W1RFI, and Membership Services Manager Wayne Mills, N7NG, from the HQ staff. In addition, EmComm Course Coordinator Dan Miller, K3UFG, and Southern Florida SEC Jeff Beals, WA4AW, presented at the Amateur Radio Hurricane Watch Net Conference, which was held in association with the Hamboree.
Dan Miller represented ARRL, with the assistance of our CNCS grant, at the National Emergency Management Association national conference in Washington, DC.
Production/Editorial Manager Steve Ford, WB8IMY, took part in the Vermont Section Convention in Milton.
Allen Pitts, W1AGP, posted the February issue of CONTACT! for Public Information volunteers.
Education and Technology Program Coordinator Mark Spencer, WA8SME, attended the National Science Teachers Association Regional Science Teacher's Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. Spencer also has posted a new project, involving handheld wireless technology.
Several ARRL officials, including Delta Division Director Rick Roderick, K5UR; Mississippi SM Malcolm Keown, W5XX; Louisiana SM Mickey Cox, K5MC, and MS Assistant SM Kenneth Bankston, W5KWB, attended the Mississippi State Convention in Jackson. Field and Regulatory Correspondent Chuck Skolaut, K0BOG, represented ARRL Headquarters.
Southern Florida SM Sherri Brower, W4STB, presented an ARRL Affiliated Club Charter to the Palms West ARC of Loxahatchee.
Great Lakes Division Director Jim Weaver, K8JE, presented a special award to the 2005 Hamvention Committee and General Chairman Gary Des Combes, N8EMO, in appreciation of the committee's invitation to host the 2005 ARRL National Convention.
At the suggestion of Life Member Bill Harris, W7KXB, of Mesa, Arizona, the ARRL VEC Department has made it possible for Amateur Radio Service applicants to complete two major forms online: NCVEC Quick Form 605 and ARRL VEC Form 605C. There's more information on Amateur Radio licensing forms on the ARRL Web site.
The DXCC Desk has approved the VU4RBI and VU4NRO Andaman and Nicobar Islands operation from November 30 through December 31, 2004, for DXCC credit. The DXCC Desk has also approved the Chesterfield Island (TX9) operation of October of 2004 for DXCC credit.
New Hampshire contest station KC1XX (chief op Matt Strelow) achieved Five Band DXCC solely through contact data submitted to the Logbook of the World.
The Monitoring System (Intruder Watch) added a new member from Missouri. An FAA representative forwarded a note of thanks to the Nebraska Official Observer Coordinator, local OOs and others for their monitoring assistance concerning a persistent interference problem.
Chief Development Officer Mary Hobart, K1MMH, and DXCC Manager Bill Moore, NC1L, attended Hamcation (the Northern Florida Section Convention) in Orlando.
Public Information Officers helped place the new promotional public service announcements with broadcast stations, cable franchises and other locations.
Affiliated Club/Mentor Program Coordinator Norm Fusaro, W3IZ, completed a new PowerPoint presentation on HF operating.
Production work has wrapped up on The 2005-2006 Repeater Directory, a new edition of Low Band DXing, by John Devoldere, ON4UN, and the 2000-2004 QST View CD.
Information Services Manager Don Durand solved a firewall problem that had been preventing W1AW from accessing the EchoLink system.
W1AW Station Manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q, printed and mailed the 2004 Frequency Measuring Test certificates.
ARRL warned its members against spurious,
virus-infected e-mails, some of which are signed "The arrl.org team"
or "The arrl.net team." These messages do not originate with the
ARRL.
