This feature--including convenient Web links to useful information--is a quick monthly update of some of the things ARRL is doing on behalf of its members. This installment covers the month of May.
Several months of hard work on the part of ARRL volunteers and HQ staff came to fruition, as ARRL EXPO, the special exhibit at this year's Dayton Hamvention, was a great success. Members and other visitors to the EXPO area were thrilled by the impressive array of things to see and learn.
ARRL and the Civil Air Patrol signed a Memorandum of Agreement at the Hamvention, and the new ARRL affinity credit card was unveiled at Dayton.
CEO David Sumner, K1ZZ, responded positively to Motorola's announcement of a new type of BPL system, one that could reduce its interference potential considerably.
In other BPL news, ARRL took issue with BPL manufacturer Amperion's version of events, posted on its Web site, surrounding a Texas BPL interference complaint last fall.
Faced with opposition from Texas hams, legislation that would have encouraged the deployment of BPL by electric utilities has failed to pass the state House of Representatives.
Ballots were counted and verified at ARRL HQ for two contested Section Manager elections. Six incumbent SMs did not face opposition and have been declared elected for a new term.
The ARRL Foundation announced its slate of scholarship winners for 2005. The 2005 Goldfarb Scholarship was won by Tim O'Donnell, AB2LE, of Cobleskill, New York.
The DXCC Desk approved the T68G, Afghanistan, operation for DXCC credit, effective April 2005.
ARES volunteers used SSTV to good advantage during a wildfire evacuation drill in Santa Barbara County, California.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recognized four hams and an ARES group among its 2005 Environmental Heroes.
Bill Barrett, W1WJB, coordinator of the Community Education Project, held a CEP field site meeting for Citizen Corps Council members and hams in Humboldt County, Iowa.
Registration opened for the ARRL Emergency Communications (Levels I, II and III), Technician Licensing, Radio Frequency Propagation, Antenna Modeling, HF Digital Communication, Antenna Design and Construction, RFI, Analog Electronics and VHF/UHF--Beyond the Repeater on-line courses. To learn more, contact the Certification and Continuing Education Program Department.
The winner of the QST Cover Plaque Award for April is Bill Smith, KO4NR, for his article, "A Low Cost Remote Antenna Switch."
The July issue of QST was released to the printer.
Lab Manager Ed Hare, W1RFI, took part in an IEEE BPL Study Group meeting in Long Beach, California.
Field and Regulatory Correspondent Chuck Skolaut, K0BOG, forwarded several reports of intruding and interfering signals to the FCC.
Regulatory Information Specialist John Hennessee, N1KB, assisted several members with covenant problems and local government zoning concerns.
The spring/summer edition of the ARRL publications catalog is available.
The Candlewood Amateur Radio Association activated W1AW during the New England QSO Party.
Field & Educational Services Supervisor Steve Ewald, WV1X, attended a SKYWARN training session in Hartford, Connecticut.
A new PowerPoint presentation on repeaters by Norm Fusaro, W3IZ, and a program on digital signal processing by Mark Spencer, WA8SME, have been posted to the ARRLWeb.
Emergency Communications Course Manager Dan Miller, K3UFG, spoke at the Salvation Army Disaster Training Conference in Orlando, Florida, and EMCOMMWEST in Reno, Nevada. Mark Spencer was the keynote speaker at EMCOMMWEST, and a number of ARRL volunteers were on hand, including Pacific Division Director Bob Vallio, W6RGG, Vice Director Andy Oppel, N6AJO, and Nevada Section Manager Dick Flanagan, K7VC.
Media Relations Manager Allen Pitts, W1AGP, was the point man for the 2004 Annual Report, which has been released to the printer. Allen also posted the May issue of CONTACT! for Public Information volunteers, and conducted two interviews with national media outlets about BPL issues.
The Contest Branch has been handling a large number of Field Day queries.
