    ARRL In Action: What Have We Been Up To Lately?

    This feature -- including convenient Web links to useful information -- is a concise monthly update of some of the things ARRL is doing on behalf of its members. This installment covers the month of September.


    Several ARES groups activated as Humberto, a Category 1 hurricane, came ashore September 13 on the Texas Gulf Coast.

    ARRL’s delegation to the 16th IARU Region 2 General Assembly in Brasilia, Brazil, consisted of President Joel Harrison, Vice President Kay Craigie, CEO David Sumner, Southeastern Division Director Frank Butler, Chief Technology Officer Paul Rinaldo and Technical Relations Specialist Jon Siverling.

    ARRL President Harrison, Great Lakes Division Director Jim Weaver and Dennis Dura from the Headquarters staff attended the GL Division Convention September 22 at Independence, Ohio.

    Rep Mike Ross, WD5DVR, was a featured speaker at the Arkansas State Convention in Mena September 8. Lab Manager Ed Hare was also in attendance.

    Delta Division Director Henry Leggette, Section Manager Malcolm Keown and Chief Development Officer Mary Hobart took part in an Open House September 7-8 at MFJ Headquarters in Starkville, Mississippi. The occasion was the company’s 35th anniversary.

    Katie Breen gave a presentation at the US Power Squadrons Governing Board meeting in Norfolk, Virginia. She also visited a meeting of the Virginia Beach ARC.

    Dakota Division Vice Director Twila Greenheck, N0JPH, resigned her position effective October 1. President Harrison has named Gregory Widlin, K0GW, of Stillwater, Minnesota, to fill out the remainder of her term.

    Dan Henderson took part in a conference call with the Department of Defense regarding the status of Amateur Radio efforts to eliminate interference with the Air Force PAVE PAWS radar systems in Massachusetts and California.

    New editions of two ARRL publications are available for sale: ARRL’s Low Power Communications and ARRL’s HF Digital Handbook. The November issue of QST and the 2008 ARRL Calendar were released to the printer. In addition, the October edition of CONTACT! for public information volunteers was posted.

    The winner of the QST Cover Plaque Award for August is LB Cebik, W4RNL, for his article "A Short Boom, Wideband 3 Element Yagi for 6 Meters."

    Al Ward, W5LUA, of Allen, Texas, has achieved the first 1296 MHz Worked All States award.

    Public Information Officers made local media more aware of Amateur Radio’s role in emergency communications, in conjunction with Amateur Radio Public Awareness Day, September 15.

    Chuck Skolaut compiled and forwarded the monthly ARRL Monitoring System report to the IARU Region 2 coordinator.

    The ARRL September VHF QSO Party and 10 GHz and Up Contest were held.

    The following ARRL Certification and Continuing Education (CCE) program online courses begin October 19: Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Level 2 (EC-002); Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Level 3 (EC-003R2); Antenna Modeling (EC-004); HF Digital Communications (EC-005); VHF/UHF -- Life Beyond the Repeater (EC-008), and Radio Frequency Propagation (EC-011).

    Ed Hare met with Ambient Corporation staff in Newton, Massachusetts, to discuss BPL issues of mutual concern.

    ICOM has agreed to serve for a third year as principal awards sponsor for the 2007 ARRL November Sweepstakes.

    Former ARRL Canadian Division Director Thomas B. J. Atkins became a Silent Key September 18 at age 81.

    The ARRL has a new MARS call sign, AAN1ARL. The station is housed at W1AW.

    Membership Manager Katie Breen sent congratulations on behalf of ARRL to Harry Mills, K4HU, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, on the occasion of his 100th birthday September 19.

    New apparel items for women are now available.

    The ARRL Letter now distributes to more than 66,000 ARRL members each Friday.

    The redesigned Fall/Winter Publications Catalog has been produced.

    Following the National Convention, Mark Spencer fulfilled numerous requests for instructional materials from volunteer instructors. Mark also gave a presentation and satellite demo to some Nevada Scouts attempting to earn their Communications Merit Badge.

    Staff travel: Dan Henderson gave presentations at the Washington State Convention in Spokane and the Pacific Northwest VHF Society Convention in Bend, Oregon. Mary Hobart and Dave Patton presented at the W9DXCC Convention in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. Larry Wolfgang spoke at the Roanoke Division Convention in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Steve Ford gave a talk at the Digital Communications Conference in Windsor Locks, Connecticut.
