Southern California hams assisted during the devastating wildfires that burned out of control for more than a week.
The ARRL and the FCC faced off at a US Court of Appeals hearing in Washington, DC October 23 over the Commission’s recent decisions that serve to promote BPL technology despite the harmful interference it causes.
The emergency communications skills of Amateur Radio operators was front and center near the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC October 3 as representatives of the ARRL and Army MARS demonstrated how ham radio gets through when other means of communications don’t.
The December issue of QST was released to the printer, as were the November/December issues of NCJ and QEX, along with the new 9th edition of The ARRL Operating Manual.
Nominations are open for the 2007 ARRL International Humanitarian Award.
The ARRL Executive Committee met October 6 in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The winner of the QST Cover Plaque Award for September is James Michener, K9JM, for his article "Maximum Gain Portable HF Yagi."
Dr Hamadoun Touré, Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union, is now HB9EHT.
Newly elected Section Managers from Delaware, Kentucky, Sacramento Valley, Puerto Rico and San Diego attended an orientation at ARRL Headquarters led by Steve Ewald, WV1X.
John Rodgers, N3MSE, of Butler, has been named Section Manager of the Western Pennsylvania section.
Three students, from Barbados, Liberia and Thailand, attended this year’s USTTI Amateur Radio Administration course at ARRL Headquarters. Several members of the HQ staff assisted Walt Ireland, WB7CSL, in teaching the course.
David Lien, W6OVP, of Battle Ground, Washington, has transferred the Web address www.QST.org to the ARRL.
The DXCC Desk has approved the following for DXCC credit: the 2007 3V8SS operation to Tunisia, the 2007 9U0A DXpedition to Burundi, and the 2007 D2DX DXpedition to Angola.
Seven public service announcements are available to help promote Amateur Radio on broadcast radio.
Admiral John Scott Redd, K0DQ (USN, Ret), announced his retirement as head of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective November 10.
The Marine Corps Marathon has designated the Amateur Radio Service as its Volunteer Group of the Year.
Chuck Skolaut compiled and forwarded the monthly ARRL Monitoring System report to the IARU Region 2 coordinator.
The following ARRL Certification and Continuing Education (CCE) program online courses begin November 2: Technician License Course (EC-010); Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Level 1 (EC-001); Radio Frequency Interference (EC-006); Antenna Design and Construction (EC-009); Analog Electronics (EC-012), and Digital Electronics (EC-013).
Comings and goings: Sean Kutzko, KX9X, has joined the Headquarters staff as Contest Manager. Long-time Headquarters staff member Eileen Sapko, who was ARRL Awards Manager, has retired, while another long-time staff member, Production Assistant Joe Shea, has left the staff to pursue another opportunity.
On the air: The School Club Roundup was held October 15-19, Jamboree on the Air was October 19-21 and the International EME Competition was October 27-28. Next: November Sweepstakes (CW November 3-5 and Phone November 17-19), International EME Competition November 24-25 and the 160 Meter Contest November 30-December 2.
Staff travel: Dan Henderson and Katie Breen took part in Pacificon in San Ramon, California. Larry Wolfgang attended the AMSAT Satellite Symposium in Pittsburgh. Dave Patton traveled to the FMRE (Federacion Mexicana De Radioexperimentadores) Convention in Acapulco, Mexico. Ed Hare attended a meeting of the IEEE EMC Society in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
