This feature -- including convenient Web links to useful information -- is a concise monthly update of some of the things ARRL is doing on behalf of its members. This installment covers the month of January.

The ARRL Board of Directors met in Houston January 18-19.

The March 2008 issue of QST was released to the printer.

The 2007 ARRL Periodicals CD is available for sale, as is a reprint of Gil: A Collection of Classic Cartoons from QST. An electronic version of The ARRL Publications Catalog is now available.

The winner of the QST Cover Plaque Award for December is Geoff Haines, N1GY, for his article "The Octopus – Four Band HF Antenna for Portable Use."

The January issue of CONTACT! for public relations volunteers has been posted.

The following 2007 operations have been approved for DXCC credit: S79UU and S79AB -- Seychelles Islands; 5L2MS -- Liberia, and D2NX -- Angola.

After a rare January EF3 tornado destroyed houses and knocked out power in Wisconsin, the Red Cross activated members of the Kenosha County and Racine County ARES groups.

On the afternoon of January 10, an EF3 tornado hit Caledonia, Mississippi. ARES and other ham volunteers assisted in advance of the approaching storm and in its aftermath.

The deadline for ARRL Foundation scholarship applications is February 1, 2008.

Registration remains open through Sunday, February 3, 2008 for these ARRL Certification and Continuing Education (CCE) program online course sessions that begin on Friday, February 15, 2008: Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Level 2 (EC-002); Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Level 3 (EC-003R2); Antenna Modeling (EC-004); HF Digital Communications (EC-005); VHF/UHF -- Life Beyond the Repeater (EC-008), and Radio Frequency Propagation (EC-011).

There were a total of 2119 student enrollments in the ARRL online courses during 2007. The most, 59 percent, were enrolled in Emergency Communications courses.

In 2007, the Outgoing QSL Service sent out 1,035,225 QSL cards, an increase over the 2006 total.

Dates for the expanded 2008 Teachers Institute have been announced.

The FCC direction-finding station followed up effectively after ARRL staff forwarded several complaints about radar-type signals heard in New England on 75 and 160 meters. Staff also forwarded to the FCC reports of CODAR (Coastal Ocean Dynamics Applications Radar) interference on 75 meters off the California coast.

On the air: Straight Key Night was January 1, the ARRL RTTY Round-up was January 5-6 and the ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes was January 19-21. Members of the HQ staff operated W1AW during the North American QSO Party. Next up: The ARRL International DX Contest (CW) is February 16-17.
