    ARRL In Action: What Have We Been Up To Lately?

    This feature -- including convenient Web links to useful information -- is a concise monthly update of some of the things ARRL is doing on behalf of its members. This installment covers the month of February.


    Chief Executive Officer David Sumner called on the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to issue a correction to an NTIA report that greatly overstates the number of current BPL [broadband over power lines] subscribers.

    The ARRL continues its work with the FCC and the US Air Force to mitigate alleged interference from nearby 70 cm repeaters to PAVE PAWS radar sites in Massachusetts and California.

    ARES and other ham volunteers assisted when a series of deadly storms swept through Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky and Arkansas.

    Field Day is June 28-29, and the 2008 rules and forms are now available.

    Two new ARRL books are available: ARRL’s VHF Digital Handbook and ARRL’s Hands-On Radio Experiments.

    The April 2008 issue of QST and the March/April 2008 issues of NCJ and QEX were released to the printer.

    The winner of the QST Cover Plaque Award for January is Rob Brownstein, N6RB, for his article "The Joy of Contesting."

    The February issue of CONTACT! for public relations volunteers has been posted.

    The DXCC branch is beefing up its staff to deal with QSL card processing delays.

    The following operations have been approved for DXCC credit: the 2008 J5C DXpedition to Guinea-Bissau; the 2007 VK9WWI DXpedition to Willis Island, the current YI9PT operations in Iraq and the 3Y0E DXpedition to Bouvet Island from December 2007-February 2008.

    It’s that time of year: Plans for ARRL EXPO at this year’s Dayton Hamvention are moving forward.

    Registration remains open through Sunday, March 9,for these ARRL Certification and Continuing Education (CCE) program online course sessions that begin March 21: Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Level 2 (EC-002); Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Level 3 (EC-003R2); Antenna Modeling (EC-004); HF Digital Communications (EC-005); VHF/UHF -- Life Beyond the Repeater (EC-008), and Radio Frequency Propagation (EC-011).

    The Fred Fish Memorial Award will be given to anyone who works and confirms all 488 grid squares in the continental US on 6 meters.

    SteppIR donated a beam antenna to the refurbished ARRL Headquarters Employees Station W1HQ, and Heil Sound donated several items to W1HQ and Maxim Memorial Station W1AW. A W1HQ blog is up.

    The 9th edition of the ARRL VEC/VE Manual is available online.

    The two winners of the ARRL Homebrew Challenge were announced. Details will appear in upcoming issues of QST.

    New Section Managers were elected in San Diego, Louisiana and Virginia. SMs in the Eastern New York, Eastern Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Dakota and Pacific sections were elected without opposition.

    On the air: The School Club Roundup was February 11-15, the ARRL International DX Contest (CW) was February 16-17, and Phone is March 1-2.

    Staff travel: Chief Development Officer Mary Hobart and Membership Manager Katie Breen took part in the Northern Florida Section Convention in Orlando. Chief Operating Officer Harold Kramer spoke at the Santa Clara Valley Section Convention. Chuck Skolaut traveled to the Vermont State Convention in Milton.
