This week's Surfin' visits a pair of blogs that provide interesting content associated with Amateur Radio.
Amateur Radio blog http://frrl.net (frrl.wordpress.com) is different. Unlike most blogs that tend to be diary-like, frrl.net uses the blog format to present an eclectic range of technical and non-technical articles related to ham radio.
For example, there you will find an article that describes how to use a standard RJ11 6-conductor telephone extension cable and coupler as a remote head extension for the Yaesu FT-7800R transceiver, an article about how "relay" got into ARRL, an article that describes how you can learn Linux and an article titled "The Riddle of Kit Building" that touches upon the history and mystery of Amateur Radio kits (Heath, Ramsey, Ten Tec, etc).
Speaking of mysteries, the author (or authors) responsible for frrl.net are unknown. I searched the blog and everything is attributed to "frrl," whoever he, she or they may be. (Thank you Mike Huedepohl, WD9GJK, for suggesting frrl.net.)
Whereas frrl.net is relatively new to the field, KE9V.net has been around for a long time in "Internet years." And unlike frrl.net, the author of KE9V is no mystery: Jeff Davis is the brains behind the operation.
Like frrl.net, KE9V.net uses the blog format to post interesting stuff related to Amateur Radio. Occasionally, KE9V "goes long," like his recent must-reading piece titled "Are US Radio Amateurs Smart," but usually his articles are shorter interesting pieces more in the vein of classic blogging. In either case, you will always find good stuff at KE9V.net and I assure you that I keep coming back.
