New Mexico Section News for September, 2009
***One of our outstanding young hams in the Socorro Area is doing a mixed
class for the Technician and General class exams. The classes will be held
on Monday Nights from 7:30 to 8:30 PM at the Mineral Science & Engineering
Complex (MSEC) Room 259 on the New Mexico Tech Campus in Socorro. This will
be in preparation for the exam session to be held at the Socorro Hamfest.
This is a very special effort by Seth Price, N3MRA and he can be reached at
(575) 418-8891. Great job Seth, thanks for your work. You are an
inspiration to us all.
***September 5 –Alamogordo Hamfest was held at the newly renovated fair
grounds. As usual this was an outstanding Hamfest. It was great to see so
many old friends and to have a chance to talk about what is going on in the
section. We had a great dinner that evening.
***September 6, 2009 – New Mexico Marathon was held in the Albuquerque area.
It was a one-way, 26-mile run. There were also a half marathon and 5K run.
Thanks to Dick Powell, AD5CS, for coordinating this event.
***2009 Route 66 On-The-Air – Once again Bill Ripley, KY5Q was one of the
ramrods of The Rt-66 OTA. Amateur radio enthusiasts and Route 66 enthusiasts
came together. The Rt-66 OTA event was held from Sept 12 to 20. There were
20 locations scattered along the Route 66 highway, from Santa Monica to
Chicago. In Albuquerque, they were signing W6H. Great job to all those who
participated.
*** The Amateur Radio Caravan Club held their annual Corn Feed on Saturday,
September 19 at Montgomery Park in Albuquerque. They had a good attendance,
the weather was great and the corn was spectacular. Steve Richie, KD5RHR,
was the grand master of the corn pot.
*** Darryl Clutter, NX5W and his group of VEs held another testing session
Saturday, September 19th, (N5YI). This group dedicates four sessions a year
to test all classes of licenses so if you want to upgrade or know someone who
does be sure to contact Darryl.
***On September 14 to 18 Frank Warren, AB5WJ, held a GENERAL CLASS license
course at the CNM Workforce Training Center. Frank and Kennie really do a
great job. Their contribution to our ham community is above and beyond the
call of duty.
***On September 19 the On Target New Mexico, a Varsity Scout activity,
attempted to communicate to other teams on nearby mountain tops by mirror
signals and Ham radios.
Upcoming events:
***October 3 – Roswell Hamfest, Tailgate and Cook Out – This annual event will
be held at the clubhouse in the park. Hope to see lots of fine folks there.
***The Mesilla Valley Radio Club will hold a Technician class October 9,10 &
11 at the clubhouse. The hours are - Oct 9th 6:00pm -9:00pm - Oct 10th
8:00am - 5:00pm - Oct 11th: 8:00am and VE testing session at 11:00. Snacks
and Drinks provided - Total cost per student $35 including the ARRL study
guide. Please try and RSVP by September 18th with Evan at ke5zrz@arrl.net
***The New Mexico Amateur Radio Alliance, NMARA, will once again have a booth
at the ABQ Home & Lifestyle show. NMARA is a permanent committee of the
Upper Rio FM Society and can provide a professional 10 x 10 booth to help
promote ham-radio activities. The booth is available to any amateur
organization in the state. It was recently used in Socorro to help promote
the Socorro club and also amateur activities at the University. For more

*** Darryl Clutter, NX5W, will hold another testing session on Saturday,
November 21st, 2009, 0900 until 1200 (N5YI). All testing will be in the
"computer lab" at Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, 501 Elizabeth St SE,
Albuquerque, NM. Darryl and his group of VEs do an outstanding job of testing
and not enough thanks are given to them for their efforts. Darryl can be

***The High Desert ARC will host a special event station, N5B, at the
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. This will be their fourth year to
have a Special Events Station at the balloon fiesta. This is excellent
exposure for Amateur Radio. Way to go High Desert!
***October 18, 2009 – Duke City Marathon. Albuquerque area amateurs have
supported this event for more that 20 years. We will need a substantial
number of volunteers to cover rest stops along the course or to shadow race

***October 31 - Socorro Hamfest – New Mexico ARES/RACES convention. For more
information go to http://www.socorroara.org/hamfest.html. The annual meeting
of ARES managers and personnel is held at this Hamfest. It really is a must
for ARES members and as usual it is a great opportunity to tailgate. The
hours are from 8 AM to 2 PM at the NM Fire Fighters Academy in Socorro.
There will be lots of great prizes, presentations and seminars. They will
also have a tour of the VLA on Friday the 30th. After the Hamfest there will
be a tour of the Radio Astronomy Observatory’s Electronics Lab in Socorro at
2:30 PM. Like to build things? Don’t miss the tour.

I see several newsletters from clubs and I greatly appreciate receiving them.
I can see that a lot of activity is going on out there but I am not receiving
any PIO requests to have activities posted in this monthly report. This is
your Section and what you do is important. If your club does not have a PIO
please get one and let me know the important things your club is doing. Have
a great month.
