Monthly Summary for July 2006
Dear Vermont Radio Amateur:
Okay, so it’s been a while since I sent you a Monthly Section News Summary:
six months to be exact. I’ve been in a little of a writing slump – my
apologies.
To catch up, I’d like to recognize the newer appointees of the Vermont ARRL
Field Organization. Everybody is doing a great job, and I could not run the
Section without them. Here (in no particular order) are the Hams that have
taken appointments in the last year:
Randy Horn N1SP OO 01-12-2006.
Randy is very happy with this new low-key appointment.
Tim Bell KA1ZQX DEC for District 8 – Windham County 03-14-2006.
Tim is back in this position after a tour of duty overseas.
John Borichevsky N1TOX EC for Guilford 03-14-2006.
John filled in as DEC while Tim was away.
Barb Tallman KB1LIF NM for Kingdom Weather Net 07-05-2006.
Barb along with her son Jerry, are doing a great job with the Net.
Bob Allen KB1FRW EC for Richmond 09-30-2005.
Bob was actually EC before this date, but did not get entered into the
database at first.
Jane English KD6PCE EC for Cabot 02-07-2006.
Jane is a displaced Californian, and will be heading up our S.E.T. this fall.
Avi Freund K1AKF PIO for CVARC 05-15-2006.
Avi and I felt that switching from EC was a better fit.
Ron Gauthier N1LDT DEC for District One 12-30-2005.
Ron stepped in to Bob Brown’s old shoes when he became SEC.
Ed Guild W1OKH EC for Essex Junction 01-23-2006.
Ed is very active in local Nets and ARES.
Bob Hawke K1LAX EC for Colchester 01-23-2006.
Bob is a big supporter of ARES.
Zach Manganello K1ZK EC for Montpelier 08-17-2005.
A full time student, Zach has an Echolink Node at his QTH.
Bob Brown W4YFJ SEC for the whole Vermont Section.
Bob is doing a terrific job in this position.
A.J. Murray N1ZWL ASM 10-25-2005.
A.J. represents the Civil Air Patrol in this position.
John Stephenson, JR N1NRA EC for Bristol 01-23-2006.
John is a long time supporter of ARES and sold me my first TNC.
Mitch Stern W1SJ PIO for RANV 05-15-2006.
Mitch had been basically doing this for years, so it was a great fit.
Bob Stewart N1NCT DEC for District Four - Windsor County 06-23-2006.
Bob, an active ARES member took over for long time DEC Richard Pierce N1JSG.
Mike Gruteke K3BRJ DEC for District Two 10-03-2005.
An EC since 1996, Mike is very enthusiastic about his new duties.
Here is a key to what those abbreviations mean:
OO = Official Observer. EC = Emergency Coordinator. DEC = District Emergency
Coordinator. PIO = Public Information Officer. SEC = Section Emergency
Coordinator. ASM = Assistant Section Manager. NM = Net Manager.
Some of these appointments were announced here last October, but were worth
mentioning again.
Leaving us this year is Bruce Bennett KB1HWB. Bruce was the Net Manager for
the Kingdom Weather Net, but had to step down for health reasons.
Randy Horn N1SP is leaving his appointment as DEC for District Five -
Bennington County on October 1 for personal reasons. Randy has held this
position since December 2002 and has made great progress with ARES in the
county.
I would like to thank all of these appointees and others not mentioned here
for all their hard work and dedication to the hobby. I really appreciate it.
Field Day came and went this past June. I had a lot of fun. How about you?
This event is so great because you can learn so much from it. At RANV, I
managed to put time in at the CW Tent, Phone Tent, VHF Station, Satellite
Station, and copied the Field Day Message in RTTY. I wandered home for a
little sleep on Saturday night, but didn’t sleep a wink. I was too pumped up
for my overnight shift in the CW tent. Where else can you get this much Ham
Radio Fun in one weekend?
Because our club was a little short on staff, I was not able to visit other
clubs around the state. However, Jane English KD6PCE represented me, and made
stops at TSARC, WRRC, SOVARC, GMWS, and CVARC. She almost made it to ACARA in
Addison, but decided against it after dinner because of fatigue and a blown
headlamp. Still she covered more ground than I have in previous years. Thank
you Jane!
Several clubs have participated in various events over the summer. I’m sorry
that I have not been recognizing your efforts these past few months, but
besides the writing slump, I’ve been very busy at home. However, these
events, large and small, help prepare us to provide communications during
times of disaster or other emergencies. They keep the less active Hams
familiar with their rig’s features, and capabilities. We all get to know each
other a little better. We hone our listening and communication skills in the
process. Keep up the efforts folks, and keep those batteries charged at all
times.
