I'm currently studying for my Technician class ham license using the book by Gordon West. I friend recommended a baefeng radio as an inexpensive first radio such as the uv-82hp. I've read that the stock antenna's normally don't get very good reception. Where can i find information to learn how to find a good antenna to replace the stock one with when carrying the handheld around?

Nagoya and Diamond make antennas to fit the Baofeng radios. You need an antenna with an SMA female connection. Also, beware of counterfeit Nagoya and Diamond antennas. A good antenna for this radio should cost $25 or $30.

This site has antenna reviews.
The performance of an antenna is limited by its size--a bigger antenna works better, assuming it is properly tuned and doesn't have issues with shoddy construction.
