Additional Information: ►These classes are done in the “Gordon West” style. He‘s the Ham who wrote the textbook that we use, and has spent many years teaching classes himself. Now retired, he only teaches classes to train radio teachers in his very successful teaching methods.
►This means face-to-face lecture, student participation, live radios in the classroom (which you will be using yourself on Saturday morning), and lots of radio components for you to examine. No PowerPoint, other than maybe a few pictures.
►This class run for a full weekend, both Saturday and Sunday, from 8 AM until about 5 PM. We do start on time, whether you are there or not. Ending time is somewhat variable, as it depends on the number of questions you ask and the level of student participation.
►There will be morning and afternoon breaks, and a lunch long enough for you to go out to one of the nearby restaurants. You can also bring your own, if you’d like.
►We provide all needed training materials, mainly Gordo’s textbook and an accompanying Q&A that is your pre-class homework.
►We also provide refreshments such as coffee, tea, hot chocolate, water, and some pastries and chips.
►Once you register, we send you, by return Priority Mail, your study packet with the items mentioned above, some study tips, and some other miscellaneous materials, depending on what’s available from our supplier at the time of your registration.
►There is plenty of free parking, and traffic is not bad at that hour on Saturday and Sunday. Sorry we can’t say the same about your return home in the evening.
►Anyone can become a licensed Ham, there are no age limits. There are Hams under 10 years old, and some (not many) over 100.
►Our goal is to have some fun, and learn more than what is needed to pass the exam. There will be a couple of video clips and some slides, but the presentation is mostly lecture. ►Questions are, of course, welcome, but the answers may be somewhat limited due to time constraints.
►There is a separate $14 cash fee collected on Sunday just before the exam. This fee is set by the certifying organization, W5YI, and is standard in all their testing sessions.
►The test is 35 multiple choice questions, and 26 is the minimum passing grade. If you complete the homework, and pay attention in class, you should have little trouble passing the exam, even if you are new to electronics.
►We are often asked why our classes cost so much, when others do them for much less. Well, most of our cost is because we provide the textbook and ship it to you via USPS Priority Mail. The remainder of our fee is because we provide refreshments, and there are other miscellaneous expenses, such as the raffled radio.
►Dress comfortably, and bring your sense of humor. Come to enjoy, meet new friends, and even enrich your life a bit. Many say they have met a lifelong goal. Remember that Ham radio is supposed to be fun, and it sure can be.
