Scenario: A 4WD vehicle equipped with a Ham radio (40 m & 80 m) hopelessly broken down (or with someone with a heart attack) in the remote wilderness of the western US.
(No 2m/440 repeaters are available.)

Question: How would I try to summon help with the Ham radio as above?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Thanks- Peter KF6FZD

I would try to find a net or QSO in progress (never very hard on 40M), and break in with "Break -- Emergency". Failing that, and only if it were a true emergency, I would find an open frequency and call "Mayday, Mayday, AI4BJ calling Mayday, Mayday".
