AX for Australia Day

01/22/2014

Australia Day is January 26, and all radio amateurs in Australia may use the AX call sign prefix on that day, instead of VK. Australia Day marks the First Fleet’s arrival in 1788 at Sydney Cove, the establishment of a settlement at Port Jackson, and the raising of the British flag by Admiral and Governor-designate Arthur Phillip.

On Australia Day many celebrate their country and culture. This includes the granting of awards, honors and the welcoming to citizenship of many qualifying immigrants.

Under a standing agreement between the Australian Communications and Media Authority and the Wireless Institute of Australia, use of the AX prefix is also available on Anzac Day, April 25, and on World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, May 17. — Thanks to Jim Linton, VK3PC
