Surfin’: A Thanksgiving Cornucopia

By Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU
Contributing Editor

In honor of the holiday, Surfin’ offers a ham radio horn of plenty.

Maybe I need to get out more.

Back in grade school, I remember images of cornucopia gracing the bulletin boards around the premises this time of year and I am sure that during art period, we drew a cornucopia with our crayons, but in my six decades on this planet, I have never seen a cornucopia in the flesh.

In anticipation of the holiday, I present you with a Surfin’ cornucopia that includes a load of good wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving.

QST On-The-Go

I received an early Christmas gift: The new QST app that allows me to download the digital editions of QST (June 2012 to the current issue) to my iPod Touch. Now I can read my favorite magazine “devoted entirely to Amateur Radio” on the go or not (like yesterday when I was sitting in my car waiting to give my boss a lift after she returned her car rental to Hertz).

QST is an iOs app, so it works with iPhones and iPads, too. It is free and you can download it from the iTunes App Store, but you must be an ARRL member to access the QST library.

BBC at 90

Norman Wald, W9VQ, came through again with a story about the BBC celebrating 90 years on the radio by broadcasting simultaneously 2LO Calling -- a “snapshot of the airwaves” featuring “iconic sound from radio over the past 90 years.”

Composed by Blur frontman Damon Albarn, 2LO Calling was “the first scheduled simultaneous broadcast since 1922,” when the BBC was established. If you missed it, there is a link in the story that allows you to replay it.

The BBC is also marking its 90th birthday with a variety of interesting historically related items on its History of the BBC webpage.

Generator Education

After I wrote about power generators two weeks ago, I received an education by way of the two dozen e-mails you readers sent me.

Going in, I thought all power generators were gasoline-powered. Now I know that there are other flavors, including propane-powered generators, which is perfect because I heat my home with propane and I have a 500 gallon tank in the yard to store it.

Until next time, keep on surfin’!
