2019 ARRL January VHF Contest

01/28/2019 | N2MKT/R

This was my first ever rover experience as typically Ive only done fixed station operations. I had a bunch of challenges . How do I mount a 36" dish for all my microwave bands on the truck with out it blowing off..Then how do I provide all that gear with power.. The 1000 watt inverter didnt work as the alternator didnt keep the battery charged, and so on.. So I had to run out a couple days before the contest and buy a 2000 watt inverter generator that caused wideband noise... The noise wasnt so band when it was mounted on the front of the truck if I only used the horizontally pol beams. I worked with the guys from the RVHFG and started out in FN23 working the bands in a snowstorm... Was disappointed that there wasnt many ops on the east side of the state.. I worked K1RZ in MD fairly easy however.. I was able to do some FT8 on 6 and 2... Sunday weather was pretty bad as 2ft of snow had dumped on us overnight. This kinda put a dampner on any activity for Sunday. But cant wait for June, so I can really test the microwaves...
