2019 ARRL June VHF Contest

06/18/2019 | KF2MR/R

Congratulations to the Rochester VHF Group on its 70th anniversary. For the past few years I have led the group in contesting activities, but all of this changed in 2019 and it is quite obvious in the June contest. Local participation and club interest surged this June to levels I have never experienced. I only participated on Sunday afternoon with the first 8 bands and it was the busiest 10 hours I have ever had. There were way more opportunities for contacts than I could possibly handle. I kept my focus on the quick and easy local contacts and there were rarely more than a few minutes of down time. We had several fixed stations who added bands and had solid microwave capabilities. I was able to complete some very easy 8 band runs with fixed stations in a matter of minutes from multiple locations due to very strong signals and good operators. We had a great pack of rovers who maximized their impact using whatever bands they had available. We also had great support from our Canadian partners who stepped up to help the celebration. Our “ring leader” for all of this was W2EV who reached out to drum up interest, including a run “over the border” to hand out club awards to our Canadian members for their January efforts and keep the enthusiasm up for June. The guys on the other side of the lake have been the lifeblood of microwave activity in the region.  It has been an honor and pleasure to serve as Chairman of the RVHFG in the first half of this 70th year and I turn over the reins to W2EV at a very positive moment in club history.
