2020 ARRL January VHF Contest

01/19/2020 | N2YTF/P

Life left me little time to contest, but I did manage to get playtime from about 2PM tp 5PM EST Sunday afternoon. With such little time my setup was cut down a bit.

I setup at SOTA summit W2/NJ-009 with a 2m and 6m beam connected to a 706MKIIG and then just HTs on 222, 446, 902, and 1.2ghz. Everything was run at 10w or less for the QRP portable class.

So much fun to hear the regulars again, K1TEO and AA2TT. Nice to work K1TEO on all bands because you don't even need an antenna to work him! K1TEO was 41 miles away, and no problem working him on 222, 446, 902, and 1.2ghz all in FM with rubber duck antennas. Some years ago I managed to work K1TEO by accident on 2m with no antenna connected to my rig....so no amount of signal strength from K1TEO can surprise me nowadays!

What fun to try FT-8 on 6m and 2m! I have used it on HF quite a bit, but never on the higher bands.  Next contest I will try 440 and up and MSK144.

It was great to hear so many new contesters on FM from summits and other places.  I didn't have time to work them but it's great to see growth.

Perhaps the most fun was working N2SLO over 35 miles away on 1.2ghz FM with my HT---he was DFQ with his big beam and amp.

73 to all and if you are interested in helping me get my 150KM and up SOTA  awards on the microwaves please let me know---I have 25W on 1.2ghz, a dream and a beam.
