08/14/2020 | N0LD/R We decided to operate as a pair of vehicles - both of us operating as Unlimited Rover - our path is in the first picture. However, friends kept appearing along the way! KB0HH made his inaugural (surprise) Rover trip to the grid square near Manchester, OK (EM07, EM17, EM06, EM16) and went around the grid square corner several times. This took longer than we expected... so we skipped the grid corner near Dover, OK. Our friend John, KF0M convinced us to work him from EM05 near an overpass west of El Reno, OK. Turns out this overpass is way above the local terrain and was a great vantage point into KS, TX, and AR! We proceeded to the grid square corner near Chickasha, OK and went through the grid combinations in frequency and location in record time. We approach OKC/Norman from the south and worked many local FM operators from the hill south of Norman. We overnighted at the N0LD/R QTH and began the trip anew - a grid square corner with three vehicles and Andrea, K2EZ/R west of McAlester, OK. After an amazing set of QSOs all the way up the 3 Ghz, we set out for the Tulsa grid square corner, first introducing Andrea to the Glenpool OK water tower. (A water tower is usually on a tall hill - it provides a good spot for VHF comms!) The corner proved fruitful and we took command of Turkey Mountain. Turkey Mountain is on the SW side of Tulsa and provides about a 300 ft "push" over the local terrain. We worked locals and contacts from 2 grid squares away on the hill in both EM16 and EM26. 6m was amazing this contest! We could count on enroute 6m Digital contacts constantly! We made 167 6m QSOs with 57 multipliers on the band! This was by far our best scoring VHF Contest as an Unlimited Rover. Over 163 points and 125 multipliers. The N0LD/R was made up of operators Randy, N0LD and Alex, KG9DUK. The KB0YHT/R was made up of operators Nick, KB0YHT and Mike Farlow. This was Mike's first operation - he is working on his Technician class license and is Nick's brother. -- N0LD
