2021 ARRL Field Day

06/28/2021 | AB9PR

Last year AB9PR and I participated together as a 2E operation from inside his garage. We had such a good time that we decided to repeat it again this year. Initially things didn't start out very well. The generator would not start no matter how we tried, the 20 meter and higher bands had very poor propagation and we had constant thunderstorms with heavy rain all day on Saturday. We tried to overcome some of those things by changing our class to 2D, but we couldn't do much about the poor band conditions on 20 and 15. Fortunately 40 played fairly well. Our stations consisted of a pair of K3s, a 40 dipole (also used on 15), a 43 ft. vertical with a remote antenna tuner and a shortened 80 inverted-V tuned for SSB. We decided to operate just CW and SSB. After calling it quits around 7pm we reconvened at 8am on Sunday morning. The weather was much better, sunny and clear and the bands sounded much better. Both of us had some nice runs on both phone and CW on 40, 20 and especially 15 which was full of stations. We ended up operating for about 10 hrs. total and worked just a couple shy of 700 contacts. In spite of our challenging start, we had a great time and we both look forward to our local club's annual Field Day event next year.
