2024 ARRL Straight Key Night
I started working Straight Key Night (SKN) on my “Early Station Desk.”
This equipment is some of what I had used early in my amateur radio adventure.
Initially, I used my 1967 Heathkit HW-16 with the HG-10b VFO.
Although it was only outputting about 35-watts, my Mosley Pro67c3 antenna helped deal with fading and weak signals.
The initial key I used in SKN was my 1920s-era “brass pounder” code key, made by Signal Electric of Menominee, Michigan.
It had belonged to my grandfather, who was killed in World War II when his ship was torpedoed by a German submarine. It has been a cherished resource since I was first licensed in 1966.
My equipment sits on a desk built by my father in 1937.
He had given it to me to use with my radios in the early 1960s and I still use it to this day.
A few hours into SKN, I paused as my wife brought dinner in to the radio room.
As SKN continued, I shifted to my primary radio desk where I used the brass pounder with my Johnson Valiant and Collins 75a-4 transmitter/receiver combination.
While still using the same T/R pair, eventually, I switched to the old military J-38 key.
Towards the tail end of SKN, I used my 1976-era FT-401b for one chat then concluded back with the HW16.
