2002 ARRL November Sweepstakes (Phone)

12/16/2002 | N2DUP Although licensed for 20 years and primarily a VHF/UHF op over the years, I finally got a full-fledged HF station on the air (IC-746 and Spi-Ro Mfg A-2 70-foot all-band limited space antenna) this fall. The locals prodded me into getting on the air with a contest, namely SS, to give the new HF station a workout.

Still learning how to work the tuner and all, and moving from band to band, I worked the contest for about 12 hours -- on 10M, 15M, 20M and a little 40M -- and had a ball.

Through the contest, I have developed my logging skills (something VHF/UHF ops don't do as much) and honed my HF operating skills, too. It was an excellent opportunity.

I worked 154 stations in 52 sections -- not bad for a first time out, I suppose. I can only get better, right?

Chuck Gysi, N2DUP / MN Section / www.scancomm.net / N2DUP@arrl.net
