2003 ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes

01/22/2003 | N3JFM Sunday mid-morning there was a knock at the door. There was a fellow standing there wearing an Oakland Raiders hat and coat. He says "are you doing some kind of broadcasting in there?" As he asks the six meter stack just above him slowly rotates towards the north and the 220 stack just off to the side rotates towards the west. Yea, some kind of broadcasting, I said sheepishly. By this time all three rotators are buzzing away swinging aluminum in different directions. I'm having trouble with my television reception, I'm hearing strange sounding voices and the picture is scrambled, he says. Can't really make out what they are saying. Little did he know I was ready for this and had a tv coax pigtail wrapped around a 43 mix'er with a high pass on the end. I handed it over and with some quick how-to installation instructions he was on his merry way with a smile. Must have done the trick he didn't return and we just kept on keeping on. Yea, some kind of broadcasting hi.
Electrical noise was a major factor during this one. During the day it was terrible in all directions on 6 and to the northeast on everything else. All the gear survived and worked flawlessly. My hat's off to the crew, Wilby-W1LBY, Doug-N3JXB, and Joe-NM3N, you guys are the greatest! More upgrades coming for June, we will be heard!!! -- N3JFM
