2003 ARRL June VHF Contest

07/21/2003 | VE3HHT This was my third (warm weather) VHF contest operating portable from my friend Johns balcony, 30 floors up in downtown Toronto. John supplies a great location, amazing view, food and photography.

I have an FT-817 and use a compromise dipole for 6 and 2 and a 7-element yagi for 432. For this year I built a W1GHZ transverter and a 3-element WA5VJB yagi for 222.

I had a lot of fun and made 40 contacts during Saturday afternoon and evening, about 10 more than my previous best. My 222 building efforts resulted in only 1 contact, but I was happy because the stuff worked.

I did have a northward contact or two. As the balcony faces south, Im not sure what propagation mode was involved. The antennas were pointed at the office buildings in downtown, so perhaps it was building scatter!
