2003 ARRL Field Day
While members of K5WPH and radio operators of SBCDR were inside providing radio communications, the SBCDR kitchen members were busy cooking a meal consisting of stew, peaches, and bread. This is a typical meal that would have been provided at an emergency field kitchen. By 1900 UTC (high noon El Paso, TX time), the stew was scrumptious.
It was an excellent opportunity for both units to co-labor and actually experience how a feeding camp is set up and what types of security is involve. For many hams that have never been on a disaster, this is a real working field kitchen.
We had a city representative stop by and visit with both organizations. The experience opened his eyes. He never knew that such organizations existed and that both would co-labored together. K5WPH also serves as a meeting place for WX5ELP El Paso Skywarn.
What a change to see men gathering around pots and pans and not radios!
