2003 ARRL Field Day
We were better equipped than usual also. A Mosley TA-33 tribander at 28 feet... not too shabby. We used a delta-loop on 40 meters which must have been working well; we received lots of comments on our signal strength. The poor band conditions on 10 and 15 meters were a bummer, but with such great weather, I wasn't complaining too much! My old FT-107 Yaesu did just fine, but seemed like a boatanchor compared to Dan's IC-746. I used the FT-107 with the matching speaker / phone patch which I modified to use as a sound card to radio interface, and we made some PSK-31 contacts with it. Dan bought the N3FJP network Field Day logging program and I made up a cross-over cable for direct connection of the computers. It worked flawlessly with no RF problems.
Murphy was no where to be found this year. He must have been out visiting club stations. Add the typical FD cookout, some family to join us in the eating, and the beer (can't forget that part) and you have a recipe for fun. The only negative - we had to mow the field we set up in (we have real field days) using a weed eater and 2 push mowers. That was some tough work. We were dog tired before we even started operating! Do we get bonus points for mowing and raking 20 inch grass? -- W4UDX
