2003 ARRL Field Day

07/14/2003 | KG4TUL I'm a fairly new ham (about a year) and this was my first Field Day. I operated Class 1B in my RV from a Corps of Engineers campground at Lake Lanier, about 50 miles north of Atlanta. The photos show the two antennas I used. I ended up doing OK overall, but mostly I learned a lot for next year's operation!

Nevertheless, there were a few highlights of the contest. First, I added about 4 states to my WAS tally. I now need only 6 or so more (unfortunately, two of those are Alaska and Hawaii, but I'll get them eventually). Second, I made a contact with the CO0US Cuban/American station on 10 meters, operating out of Havanna. Third, and most interesting, was that I didn't want to pull and all-nighter, so I tapped out around midnight. At about three a.m., I woke up and, just for the heck of it, decided to check to see if anyone was on the radio ... it was packed! I got a whole bunch of contacts, including half a dozen with west coast operators. What fun! -- KG4TUL
