2003 ARRL Field Day

08/10/2003 | W2YRC Field Day has come and gone and what remains are some really terrific memories. The Yonkers Amateur Radio Club once again set up at Redmond Field in Yonkers New York and a good time was had by all. This year's Field Day included some really great new antennas. Rich KC2HZW refurbished a Tri-band antenna and provided a monster 2 element yagi for 40 meters. Cliff KC2CXL provided a wire antenna that allowed us to work 80 and 160 meters and Brad KC2CGI made sure that no one was hungry. Darwin KC2CMQ provided yagis for 2 meter and 70 centimeters.

Despite 10 and 15 meters being on vacation, we still managed to work many stations thanks to the antennas we had. Yet there is more to Field Day, there are memories that will last a long time. Memories such as seeing a new ham make their fist HF contact or watching Darwin KC2CMQ "break dance" (actually I think he found a hornets nest or they found him).

What would Field Day be without a visit from "Murphy", yes Murphy's law was in effect but in the true spirit of Amateur Radio we improvised and overcame. We were honored by visits from our State Assemblyman Michael Spano and received a proclamation from our City Council President Vincenzza Restiano proclaiming the Weekend Amateur Radio weekend. Most important was the opportunity to remind our elected officials that in time of need we are ready and willing to assist our community.

I guess some folks like to refer to me as the Chairman of the Field Day committee, but I am only a small part of this effort. Field Day is about the hams and the hams of the Yonkers Amateur Radio Club made this a Field Day to remember. Thanks to all that helped and contacted us, look for you again at Field Day 2004! 73 -- W2CZ
