2003 ARRL Field Day

08/15/2003 | K4OO The Smith Chart Amateur Radio Society, K4OO did Field Day 2003 for the fourth year in a row from a remote location near Meadows of Dan, Virginia. Being a Raleigh, North Carolina club, this location is about 175 miles from Raleigh, but is well worth the trip due it the excellent location in the Blue Ridge mountains of southwestern Virginia.

We ran a 2A Low Power operation with two AB-577 military masts for the tri-band beams, a wire beam and inverted V on 40 meters, and a dipole on 80M. The weather was great except for a 2AM thunderstorm that put us off the air for a few hours on Sunday morning. The food was fantastic thanks to our excellent food committee, and we all had a great time operating.

We had over a dozen hams at the site to help with setup, operating, telling tall tales around the food tent, and overall making this another enjoyable and meaningful Field Day.

We had a great group of new hams and prospective hams who operated our GOTA station.

A big thanks to Bob, K4HA our Field Day Czar for all the planning to pull this off. A very special thanks to Arden and Golda Quesinberry, who allowed us to use this wonderful site on his Patrick County, Virginia farm. -- W4FAL -- W4FAL
