2003 ARRL Field Day

11/19/2003 | K5WNH This was my third year (1B) at this location with an R5 vertical (20/15) and trap dipole (40/80) on CW. It was also the most frustrating year due to band conditions (410 QSOs) but field day is always wonderful! The site is about 60 miles northwest of Ft.Worth, Texas (Near Chico,Tx) in Wise County. Other than a few untimely visits from cows, skunks, and an occasional raccoon, this is a terrific field day site where the only sounds are those of birds and an occasional gentle breeze in the "tree" (only one) hi. Next year, the gloves come off and the beam goes up...get ready 1B! My first field day was in 1958 (Kermit, Tx) with several to follow. However, some 38 years would pass before the opportunity to get back in the FD mode would occur and I'm hooked! It truly is the greatest thrill of amateur radio! Note: In 1999, a rare December tornado ripped through this exact spot removing a large mobile home from under the tree and taking the life of a neighbor about 1/4 mile from this location. -- K5WNH
