2003 ARRL September VHF Contest

09/15/2003 | W7GK Packed the gear into the truck and operated a single-low power from the top on Pennsylvania Hill (9400' MSL) in Elko County, NV. This site is about 10 mi. SSW from the town of Mountain City in the northeastern part of the state.

Gear consisted of an FT-847 and a stacked array of 4 el. on 6m, 11 el. on 2m and 11 el. on 432 mhz.

Weather was great. Temps were moderate and winds very low for this elevation in mid September. That's the good news.

Bad news is nothing in the way of a band opening occurred. Occasionaly a word or a syllable would pop in then disappear just as fast.

Did work into central OR on 432 mhz. and had several contacts into CA on 6. Not much to brag about.

With luck next contest we'll experience better band conditions. Be pretty difficult to top June 2003's conditions.

Highlight of the weekend was watching a group of 10 American eagles flying around the site. Really an awesome sight seeing them riding the air currents up then do their rolls, twists and dives. -- W7GK
