2004 ARRL Field Day

07/02/2004 | AB0PC Hamming it Up, Up, and Away!

Although Field Day is an important event for Hams to test ones ability to set up and operate under emergency circumstances, and many rewards come thru accomplishing that very task, it is always equally rewarding to be reminded that being a Ham can be fun and exciting too.

After a long and tiring 20+ hours of operating Ham radio under emergency conditions, thru torrential down pours and pounding hail, members of the Park County Radio Club pause for a moment with great anticipation.

Early Sunday morning the weather conditions were perfect for a unique experience. A Hot-Air Balloon was launched with radio operators, and rig at hand, to make contacts throughout the country during this annual Amateur Radio Field Day event.

Imagine this: An enormous Balloon rises in the early morning blue sky, back-dropped by none other than our beautiful Rocky Mountains, and lifting Ham operators while they make contact with the rest of the world. Radio contacts echo thru the valley. What more can one say than, Wow, its great to be a Ham!

Many Thanks go to Ted Wilson kb5cnb of Bailey, CO for hosting the Field Day event, and the Aeronautical Grafix Co, for that delightful Hot-Air Balloon experience. -- W0ELF
