2002 ARRL International DX Contest (Phone)

03/06/2002 | NS1Z I had fun playing in this contest. I wanted to earn the "Pin" so my operating goal was not too extreme. I figured I could find time between chores to do that during the weekend. Just prior to the contest I learned that one of my buddies was also interested in earning the "Pin". Now the heat was on, I had to get busy not to finish behind him!

Writelog was used for logging/exchanges and made the contest that much more fun. No strained vocal chords here. The rig was ICOM's IC-746 and the antenna was an old HyGain TH-6DXX purchased in 1979 just after an upgrade (remember them?). The only problem with this setup was that the winter had taken its toll on the rotor under the TH-6 and I could not move it off Europe. Maybe that was a good thing. I am not much of a Contester/DXer at this poing but found that the excitement of many operators during this contest was quite contagious.

I managed to work more than 100 multipliers so I did manage to achieve my goal. In the process I really enjoyed myself. I even worked some QRP stations during this event. Now those guys really like a challenge.

I plan on being back for the next running of this 'test. Lots of fun for a "Little Pistol" such as myself. I enjoyed the ability to get on as time allowed and obtain a decent score. There are still other things to do on the weekend, even during the winter months so this contest worked out well.

Now, if eQSLs ever get implemented, I am well on my way to awards chasing as well. -- NS1Z
