2002 ARRL International DX Contest (Phone)

10/29/2002 | KX1X KB1FVL, KB1FSU, KB1GHC, and myself made the venture to the Kx1x operating QTH for the ARRL International DX Contest 2002. He operates a well organized station from there, and scores relatively high despite the fact that he has no amps. I had tugged along my TS440, which sat adjascent to his on top of a counter. The apache server, which sat on the floor next to me, houses the Hampden County Radio Association's (www.hcra.org) website. It hummed away all night long and was the cause of some amusement between ourselves. I was using a TA33Jr. beam atop the peak of the roof into my 440, and into his he ran a TA33Sr. atop his tower, with the beam pointed EAST into Europe and later West into Asia. I told him so many times that when the sun came up, I HAD 15! TOO LATE I CALLED IT! NOPE, I WANT IT BECAUSE I'M GUEST OP! It was really comical untill he agreed to let me use it. Lacking an amp, as soon as the sun came up, I ran strait down the band and worked anyone and everyone who dared to call CQ CONTEST, QRZ? I managed to get every station calling at that time, and then perchedon 21.400 and called. I was met with a barrage of calls, each of which was recieved with a pleasant exchange. That night, however, I didn't sleep, so the next morning I really couldn't contest. I actually remember falling asleep three times. Andy, KB1FVL slept all night long and into the morning. Erik, KB1FSU, slept later on. KB1GHC popped in towards the end and played radio for us -- he brought us many contacts. When the end came, we all went home, tired and fried from stray RF (just kidding). We didn't do incredibly well, but we will not make the same mistakes again. Plus, we weren't really terrible, but a new score is really the thing to shoot for. Good luck in the contests! 73' de -- KB1FWN
