2005 ARRL 160 Meter Contest
Boy, what a challenging experience this contest was. I think this was my 11th or 12th consecutive 160 test, and it turned out to be the best so far. I set two important goals, make more than 300 Qs, and get AK for last state WAS 160. Well, I did accomplish first, but missed the last.
I am somewhat antenna handicapped, with only room for a short wire antenna for the top band. Although, I have heard rumor there is one other local, K0PG/9 Tim, who is even more challenged than I am, antenna wise that is. Tim, I didnt know you could load a patio door frame on 160, much less make contacts with it!! Congratulations!
My only antenna for 160 is a Alpha Delta DX-B 67 shortened sloper, at a height of 35 sloping down to 5 above ground, aimed 60 degrees. Not a good direction for AK!
I saw many spots for NL7Z, and heard the pile on him, but could never hear him. Not even a dit out of the noise. Noise was a problem Saturday night with the snow falling, as I had between an S3 and S5 of constant noise, and no RX antenna to switch to. The band finally quieted down around 3am local time Sunday morning, but I still could not hear AK. I had a strong signal on VE7CC, who I eventually worked, but no AK.
Positive highlights: 325 Qs ( all S&P), only missed 3 states for WAS in contest, worked 2 DX and 67 sections, made many contacts on first call with only 100 watts.
Not so positive lights: noisy band Saturday night, missing goal number 2.
All in all it was fun time as usual. I make it a point to schedule all other activities around operating this contest. 160 is such an unpredictable band, where I have enjoyed many pleasant surprises.
The Top Band season is just now beginning. I am looking forward to what surprises may be out there waiting.
See you gentlemen at the top.
