2006 ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes

01/29/2006 | WD0ACD Ahhh....Christmas Break..... Hey! Why not add a couple more bands to the ACD rover-mobile for the January Contest.....Gee, if it was only that simple!

We all know the rest of this story: My wife Karla - N5KUR, my roving partner Joe - K5FOG, and I worked night and day to get 222 and 902 transverters running...Unfortunately our jobs, our family, and Murphy conspired against us. Oh well - Screaming across Texas and Oklahoma with 4 bands is a whole lot better than sitting at home in front of the tube.

After moving the water pipe 6m squalo to the top of the Suburban's land-schooner mount, we attached the antennas and off we went to meet up with Steve N5AC and his OM (really!) Bob - W5TX in EM11.

The bands were crummy, but the company was great and the big guns across TX and OK kept us awake as we lit up 13 grids, including 4 new ones in NTX and OK. All in all, not bad....886 miles, 271Q's, 35K+ points including a personal high of 51 1296 Q's.

Thanks to everyone we worked along the way. A special thanks to my good buddy and roving partner Joe - K5FOG, for putting up with me as I de-stressed from having to leave semi-functional hardware behind. I promise I'll try to get a few more bands for June.....

73,
Greg -- WD0ACD
