2006 ARRL Field Day

06/30/2006 | K5WNH This was another fun Field Day even with propagation lacking, at least in the eyes of the QRP crowd. When the event started, 20 meters was the outright "band of choice" although later, 15 and even 10 meters would have some openings. I tried a new antenna on 40 this year (double extended zepp) but it didn't seem any better than the previous years inverted vee...maybe I need a little more height! I must be the only person that has trouble finding telescoping poles longer than 30' these days! This was my 5th year at this location...I'm inspired by some of the pictures and articles on this site to try and find a remote and unique location for next year...it's tough to wait 12 months! The rig was a Yaesu @ 5 watts, MFJ keyer, deep cycle marine battery, solar panel, TH-3Jr. and a double extended zepp. The blue "side tarp" in the picture was installed to block the rather intense sun in the afternoon. Other than 2 "bobcats" showing up around 1:30am Sunday, it was a quiet FD except for the loyal field day troops on the HF bands. Let's have that winter field day!!! 73s and thanks to all for a great fun! -- K5WNH
