2007 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/03/2007 | KL7WP This was my first SKN after more years in ham radio than I care to admit and I've always favored CW. I know, "What took me so long?

From my new home in Portland, Oregon I decided to jump in at the last moment and didn't have a "real" straight key. So I put my keyer in manual mode and used one side of my paddle. Well, I soon realized my manual fist could use some practice but I really enjoyed the few QSOs logged. All four of them.

Had a lot of QRN, on 8o and 40 meters. Also, a window mounted whip is not the most efficient antenna, especially on the lower bands. But my apartment is on the tenth floor so at least the height gives me a slight advantage.

Already thinking about next year and will be on the prowl for straight key at the next hamfest and flea market. -- KL7WP
