2007 ARRL Straight Key Night
Right up until the last minute we didn't think that Maritime Radio Historical Society station K6KPH would be able to participate in SKN 2007 due to personal schedule conflicts. But at the last moment a couple of hours opened up in my schedule. I grabbed my 'phones and key (made by LA2PL and recovered from the radio room of a Greenpeace ship) and headed out to the station.
Brothers and sisters of the continuous wave, what could be better than hearing the practitioners of the sacred art of Morse fill the bands wall to wall - just like it used to be in the golden years? Why nothing, of course. It was windy and cold out at the Pt. Reyes peninsula but the sounds of Morse warmed the shack better than any fireplace ever could. For me the best was the wonderful yooping signal of the "Old Oak Rig" at W7OS. The op on duty played it like an instrument, drawing out his dashes to bring out the full character of the signal. Well done, OM!
The accompanying photo shows operating position 1 at KSM/K6KPH. Even though bugs are shown rest assured that only the straight key was used on SKN.
Keep the faith...
