2007 ARRL Field Day

06/25/2007 | KQ4BH What a great Field Day! The equipment worked, the weather stayed clear, the bands were hot, and so was the food. We set up the GOTA station with the Grand Strand ARC at the Coastal Carolina Chapter of the Red Cross in Myrtle Beach,SC. While W4GS was cranking up the operation we presented a class for the BSA Radio Merit Badge. Four Scouts came out and completed the class, each one operating from one of the 3F stations or my GOTA KQ4BH. At supper time it was brats and chili, a Scout's dream come true.
Then it was back to the tent to work forty meters and give our visitors and HF challenged hams a chance to work the long bands. The best part was coaching a newly licensed couple through their first HF contacts. I was surprised to find that after a couple of sweeps of the 40M band, I continued to find new stations and only a few dupes, and through the night worked most of the country from a dipole in the pine trees.
In the morning we fed the hardy crew with pancakes, bacon, and coffee. Finally worn out at noon I turned in my log and began to pack it all back in the truck for the short ride home. Later in the day my lawn mower kept running a tune of "CQ Field Day CQ Field Day". -- KQ4BH
