06/27/2007 | W5NOR SCARS FD 2007 was held at Reaves Park in Norman, OK. We operated 3A with Phone, CW and Digital (PSK) stations. We also set up a 6M station. We were fortunate to get a lot of local publicity in the paper and recognized the week before at the City Council meeting where the week was declared Amateur Radio Week by Mayor Haralson. A photographer came out from the Norman Transcript and one of his pictures graced the front page of the newspaper. We were visited by our ARRL Section Manager, the OK ARES SEC and his Assistant SEC, the Norman Emergency Coordinator, a representative of the OKC American Red Cross, Scout Master and 4 members of a Scout Troop and also Mayor Haralson came by.
We ended with 581 CW contacts, 293 Phone and 73 Digital which was pretty good considering one of those good-ol Oklahoma thunderstorms rolled through Saturday evening and we had to disconnect and cover up for a while. We worked all the sections in every area except:
WMA in 1, PR & VI in 4 and NL, QC and NT in Canada. Now thats coverage! We obtained most of the bonus points and most importantly, everyone had a good time. -- WG5T
