2007 ARRL 10 GHz and Up Contest

10/17/2007 | KC0P Some members of the NLRS (Northern Lights Radio Society)
like to operate 10 GHz rain or shine. The rain gives
opportunity for rain scatter, if you can find a spot to
set up out of the rain. The first Saturday a fixed team
set up in the next to the top level of a parking ramp
in Eden Prairie, MN EN34GU to get out of the rain. My
first rain scatter contacts were from my family room,
out across the deck and skimming over the neighbors
house from Rochester EN34SB. I estimate I had to raise
the dish at least 20 deg above the horizon on the 119 km
path. Good signals on both CW and SSB from Jon W0ZQ,
Dave N0KP, Gary WB0LJC and John W0JT.

My second set up was any shelter in a storm. Well it had
to be at least a ten mile move and high and open in the
desirable direction. A picnic shelter at Ridgeway EN43FV
extended the path to 186 km back to the parking ramp.

The September weekend brought better sun and a chance to
rove with Gary WB0LJC in SE Minnesota and NE Iowa, the
bluff country to work a fixed team on Buck Hill EN34IR
and another rover team in Wisconsin. Buck Hill had Jon W0ZQ,
Dave N0KP, Tony KD0JI, Don WA0SSN, Glen KC0IYT, and John
W0JT. The Wisconsin team had Bruce W9FZ, Holly K0HAC,
Chris N0UK, and Jerry WA9O. We managed 11 set ups and
completed 88 QSO's ranging in distance from 99 to 214 km
in one day, 15 Sep 2007. A good time and fun to rove as a team. -- KC0P
