2007 ARRL 160 Meter Contest

12/06/2007 | VE3CUI The first time I ever took part in this contest was (I believe!) back in 1974...

For all you "newbies" reading this, in those days we still had the LORAN mess on 160-meters --- the continent was divided-up into distinct regions, with 25-KHz wide "sub-bands": there were specific "daytime" and "nighttime" power limitations per sub-band, per region...and running a kilowatt was unheard of then!

I was content to plug away with my E.F. Johnson Ranger-1 transmitter, & my AC/DC Hallicrafters S-77A receiver...the antenna was a dipole cut for 80-meters, fed with TRUE open wire ladderline...

As I recall, I made something like 174 QSOs then...and was only licensed for about 3-1/2 years to that point...but I sure did feel like some sort of a pioneer doing it all. There were few locals on Top Band back then, & it was a real novelty! -- VE3CUI
