2008 ARRL Field Day

06/30/2008 | K1UR For the fourth year in a row, K1UR and K1NR operated class 1C mobile from K1UR's 1963 Land Rover. The nice thing about operating mobile is that you're not tied down to any location. We've operated from different places each year and 3 of 4 years the weather forecast determined the general direction we wanted to head, to have the nicest weather possible.

This year with the theme being "Ride The Waves" we felt we should head towards the ocean and so decided to operate along the banks of the Cape Cod Canal. We figured that would provide waves, some interesting scenery and water usually provides good operating conditions too.

Our first parking spot proved unsatisfactory, with S9+ noise levels, so we tried a few other spots and eventually ended up spending most of the contest at the east end of the canal. For much of the day we were fogged in and it was interesting watching the ships appear out of the fog as they went down the canal.

We ran all the HF bands and were also set to go on 6m, 2m and 70cm but did not hear any activity on those bands. We tried digital modes for the first time, making a few PSK31 QSOs on 20m.

All in all, a great day operating from a really nice location. Can't wait to do it again. -- K1UR
