2008 ARRL Field Day

07/01/2008 | N2JFS The Halifax Emergency Communication Krew consisted due to last minutes cancellations and no-shows of one (1) operator this year, me. Despite the depressing start the weather was nice and the set-up went smooth. No surprices there.

This year we (I) added a new mode of operation, PSK31. It is not a disadvantage with QRP as it is working SSB. Thanks to the eminent creation by W8NUE and N2APB I was able to operate without computer, something alway appreciated in the field. (How do you power a computer if you work QRP/battery, a ton of batteries and an inverter?)

The sign of this field day went in Extension Cords. I used extension cords as antenna. Not a big deal, just wanted to test it. The extension cords are heavy though and it was hard to erect. I had a sizable sag that I could not remove. Looked good though, attension grabing. I will not do that again though.

My attempt with alternative power sources did not work despite access to ample amout of food. Will add cheese next years. That might improve the set-up. -- N2JFS
