2008 ARRL Field Day

07/06/2008 | N5PJ N5PJ-Field Day 2008, pictures included below.

Jeff (WD0GTY)and I have been talking about a camping trip Field Day for years.if we could ever get a round tuit. Well this year we finally got a round tuit Our plan was to go to Scissortail Camp Ground at Arcadia Lake in Edmond, Oklahoma and operate 1B using a generator during the day and a battery during the quiet hours of the night.

Friday night we fired up the generator to test it and charge our deep cycle battery. It ran and charged the battery. The next afternoon we fired the generator up and it ran for about 5 minutes before it succumbed to a noisy death. This means we had to operate our computer and Kenwood TS440 SAT using our deep cycle battery.

We like to operate CW so we believe that helped us power wise. Jeff did make 4 phone contacts for a visitor from his workplace.

We were able to operate for about 16-18 hours before our battery dropped to 10% capacity and then the transceiver started to act up.

We operated under a canopy using a G5RV up about 10 feet. We used a chain and boomer to secure the antenna support to the concrete picnic table.

We cooked out for our nutrition and provided some nice warm red blood cells for the ticks.

It was a great Field Day.probably the most fun for both of usdespite the hot humid weather...and we learned much to be applied next year.
